Today, Western horses compete in a wide variety of disciplines, including Trail, Showmanship, Horsemanship, Western Pleasure, Ranch events, Reining, Cutting, Working Cow Horse, Halter, Hunter classes, and many more. This course is based on AQHA rules and show procedures, but it is designed to be useful across the wider Western horse industry.

Whether you are involved with Quarter Horses, Paint Horses, Appaloosas in Ranch events, Gymkhanas or other Western shows, the skills covered in this course can be used across many different events.

Each association may have its own rules, but the basics of being a good show official remain the same — good organisation, clear communication, safety and helping the show run smoothly.

I'm Carla Cox

After many years in the western horse industry, I saw firsthand how often show officials were simply thrown into the deep end. Whether paid or volunteering, the expectations are high, yet the guidance isn’t always there. That’s what motivated me to create this course.

My goal is simple: to give every steward, gate marshal, and show official the knowledge and confidence to step into the role prepared, professional, and one step ahead. From understanding arena flow and communication to handling pressure and real show scenarios, this course is designed to reflect what actually happens in the arena, not just theory.

With experience across the industry and a strong focus on professional standards, I’ve built this training to support both newcomers and those wanting to refine their skills. Because when officials are confident and capable, the entire show runs better.

Why I Do It

This course was created with one clear purpose, to help western show officials feel confident, capable, and prepared before stepping into the arena. From arena flow and communication to problem-solving under pressure and managing real show situations, the training focuses on practical knowledge that reflects what truly happens at horse shows.

Built from real industry experience and a strong belief in professional standards, this course is designed to support both new and experienced officials looking to build confidence, improve their skills, and better understand the roles behind the scenes.
